The Jonah series

Artist Susan Olmetti Strikes Jonah For Strokes On Canvas

In the Jonah series, Susan Olmetti has chosen to identify herself with Jonah, history's well-known escape artist and harbinger of bad luck, though redemption is the ultimate end game.

In the contemporary abstract artist's new series, the artist's varied artistic concerns and approaches stream through the paintings' different formal elements in a battle for mastery of the canvas. Racing and weaving amongst each other, they ultimately come together in a fanciful play of color and explosive movement.

The Jonah series is fraught with tension which exudes the humanity of the painter. All frailties and weaknesses are apparent in implication yet spectator find themselves captured by the movement as if careening into the
center of a vortex, and yet a sense of wholeness by being liberated from the individual elements that make up the artwork. The ride viewers take by viewing the works is evokes feelings of a tumultuous ride that Jonah must
have experienced.

= INTERPRETATION =

The eyes and ears of the public are increasingly drawn to the issue of race
as the first African American President of the United States makes his choices
for staff positions. To many, this would outwardly appear to mean that the American
public has accepted equality and wants to see what he can do. Should he fail, it's
likely to fire renewed bigotry and destroy any credibility established along
the way.
